The importance of exploring

Verb: to traverse or range over (a region, area, etc.) for the purpose of discovery.

Travel is far more accessible to a greater audience nowadays than it was two decades ago.  The act of exploration is typically associated with a location, a place.  People go to places to see what they may discover – cavers for new underground cave systems, archaeologists for ancient sites or tourists to a country for sights they more not see in their own country.  However, exploration should not be limited to what can be seen in a given location.

To explore one’s psyche is just as imperative.  Rather than blocking out sadness or anger, try diving into these emotions and see what results arise from exploring.  Sadness doesn’t mean that the image has to express depression.  There is the possibility that beauty or hope emerges.  In times of sadness, in isolation, it is possible to see something that brings out hope or beauty that lifts our depression.  Alternatively, we seek comfort during these times so objects that provide us comfort could also be captured with a different perspective.  Consider a bowl of soup.  When we are in moments of good health, the bowl of soup may be just another regular bowl of soup.  However, when we’re sick, the bowl of soup can provide great comfort.  Two different moments, but completely different feelings.

Photography goes beyond pressing the button to make the image with the camera.  Experience is not isolated to the ability of using a camera, but encompasses the spirit to continuously explore both connection between the physical location and inner psyche.  Subsequently, this leads to a strong connection for the viewer and the photograph.
