If your images aren’t good enough,
you’re not close enough. – Robert Capa
This is the maxim most photographers tend to follow. From a literal perspective, the photographer needs to reduce the physical distance between themselves and the subject. This is achieved either by stepping up to be closer to the subject or using a telephoto lens to get a tighter composition.
It does not need to be a literal meaning. A photographer needs to connect with the subject. It’s not a physical closeness, but one based on humanity.
I constantly ask myself:
Do I connect with the subject?
How can I connect with the subject?
During a session, it is my once in a lifetime opportunity to connect with that person(s). Once the moment is gone, it’s gone. Everything in life is impermanent. There is nothing that can be done to re-create the moment.
